Results confirm current AI systems are sophisticated pattern matchers rather than genuine reasoners, highlighting a critical gap in the path toward artificial general intelligence. ## Introduction The evaluation of artificial intelligence has increasingly focused on complex, formal tasks. Models now surpass human performance on mathematical competitions, coding challenges, and standardized examinations. GPT-4 scores in the 90th percentile on the bar exam. Claude can solve International Math Olympiad problems. Yet ask these same models "What does chocolate taste like?" and watch them either fabricate sensory experiences they cannot have or launch into unnecessarily complex explanations about why they can't taste. This trajectory overlooks a fundamental question: can these systems demonstrate the basic forms of reasoning that emerge early in human cognitive development? ## Why We Built CHILD CHILD was born from frustration. At Monostate, we were developing AI systems that needed to handle ambiguous, creative, and fundamentally human situations. Existing benchmarks weren't helping us evaluate what mattered.
